Samsung Galaxy S3 specifications

Your quick guide to the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S3, followed by  a brief look at the main features.

Smart Stay
The phone tracks your eyes, so as long as you’re looking at it, the display won’t dim or turn off.

Direct Call
If you’ve got a contact on your screen, there’s no need to hit call: simply hold the device up to your face and the number will be dialled automatically.

Smart Alert
Samsung’s enhanced notifications centre tells you what’s happened since you last looked at your phone in order of importance.

Burst shot and best photo
The 8MP camera now offers a 20-shot burst mode and will choose the best photo for you. Photos now possible at the same time as video filming.

Face Zoom and Slide Show
Double tap a face to zoom in; automatic slide show generation zooms in on faces as individual pictures for pictures with lots of people

Social network and camera integration
Automatic tagging of pictures, and the option to send images directly to those identified in them, called Buddy Photo Share, or display social media profile information on screen. Group Tag lets you tag multiple people in one go, if you set up a group first.

Dropbox storage
50GB of free Dropbox storage for two years.

S-Voice
That’s S for Samsung, not Siri. This feature allows you to control your phone through voice, eg to turn up the volume, and to ask it questions.

S-Beam
High speed file transfer via NFC and WiFi Direct, between two phones touched together, operating at up to 300Mbps.

Pop Up Play
Play video in a window on any homescreen.

All Share Play and Cast
Share your S3’s screen to a TV, or use the screen as a remote control.

Design
The S3 is an evolution of last year's perfectly nice looking S2, and it's taken on a more rounded shape, which makes it look a little warmer somehow. Around the back it has one of those trademark Samsung flimsy back panels, which helps to keep the weight down, but it still manages to feel well built.

Even so, it's a beast of a handset, with its Amoled touch screen under Gorilla Glass stretched from the S2's 4.3 inches to 4.8 inches -- it'll fill a lot of space in your pocket. That screen is, however, gorgeous, squeezing in an HD resolution of 720x1280 pixels (a big step up from the S2's 480x800).

It's bright, and the colours are intense, as we've come to expect from Super Amoled screens, but strangely, it seemed to struggle in sunlight more than we'd expect -- even relatively modest rays were enough to render it unreadable. Still, it's beautifully sensitive and responded easily to our brushes and presses. It's great for watching video too, though the position of the small loudspeaker on the back next to the camera lens is a bit odd, since the sound is muffled if you lay the phone flat while you're watching.

Processing horsepower
A screen as impressive as this needs a powerful processor to do it justice, and this the Galaxy S3 has with its quad-core 1.4GHz Arm Cortex-A9 backed by 1GB RAM. It's just about as fast as it gets on a handset these days, and its performance is silky smooth, even a handful of busy apps running.

Samsung has added its own TouchWiz interface to the latest Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It's not as distinctive as HTC's Sense interface but it looks clean and efficient, and comes with handy widgets for all the usual updates. Many of these are resizable, which is a nice touch, and allows you to give your email or calendar widgets just as much prominence as you like.

There are of course animated enhancements aplenty, from the lovely little ripple effect that unlocks the screen, to the 3D-esque shifting between the seven screens. Then there's Pop Up Play, a cute trick that allows you to have a picture-in-picture video playing while you surf the web or view your messages. It's impressive to look at, especially since you can drag it around anywhere on the screen but really, is this multi-tasking gone mad?

Samsung Galaxy S S3 GT-I9300 Features Take Tours:

Samsung Galaxy S S3 GT-I9300 Factory Unlocked Phone - International Version (Pebble Blue) features

Ice Cream Sandwich's face recognition capability is here if you want it so you can use your fizzog as the key to unlock your phone, along with voice recognition if you feel the need. Samsung has also bigged up its eye-tracking technology which is meant to keep the display on if it detects you looking at it. It doesn't seem to work at all if you just have a home screen open, and with apps like the browser it seemed to be a bit hit and miss -- even with a face directly in front of the screen.

The Galaxy S S3 is packed with handy features and apps -- it's not really bloatware if it's actually useful, is it? File-sharing service of the week Dropbox is integrated, giving you two years' free online storage of up to 50GB. One-time Apple exclusive Flipboard is also here, allowing you to see all your social network updates, news feeds and more as a sort of flip-through magazine. It also sits on your home page as a constantly updating widget.

There's NFC ( Near Field Communication), ready for phone-based payments, and S Beam, which allows you to send large files such as videos over a Wi-Fi connection. Voice control is called S Voice, with a logo that looks very similar to iTunes' Siri and it's every bit as useful, ie okay if you have the patience to repeat every other thing you say when you're making requests.

Syncing with your computer is via Samsung's Kies software and you can get exclusive apps beyond the Google Play store from Samsung Apps -- not that they're anything special, mind.

Camera and video of Samsung Galaxy S S3
The 8 megapixel camera has the same pixel count as the S2, but it's also learned a few new tricks, including the zero shutter lag feature from the Samsung Nexus, so it can take snaps just as fast as you can press the shutter, and you can now take still pics in the midst of recording video, like the HTC One X. There's also a feature that suggests your best pic after you've made a few shots of the same subject. It uses an algorithm based on smile detection and face recognition, apparently, but it's really more of an interesting gimmick than actually useful.

It can suffer a bit from lens flare, and isn't always the best at handling differing shades of light within a frame. But get your light right, and you've got one of the better camphone snappers available anywhere, with good colour balance and sharp edges.

How good is the phone's camera?
Samsung Galaxy S S3 camera sample photos

It can handle 1080p video recording at 30fps, which looks great, though it's a shame there's no HDMI socket for direct transfer to an HD telly. There's a 2 megapixel camera on the front for video calls -- better than the HTC One X's 1.3.

As for memory, it's available in 16GB, 32GB (Vodafone exclusive) and (later) 64GB versions, though you can add another 32GB via microSD card.

The sizeable 2,100mAh battery puts in a good effort, but with that big screen to power, and multitasking positively encouraged, you'll still be lucky to get more than a day out of it.

Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a prince among Android phones, no question, and it's packed with pace-setting tech, including its gorgeous HD Amoled screen and quality 8-megapixel camera.

Faced with a choice between this and HTC's One X, it's a case of horses for courses -- if photos are important to you, you'll go with the Samsung, but the HTC has a more attractive and better implemented interface. And if you're fingering your S2 as you read this, wondering whether or not you should make the jump to the S3 -- go on, you won't regret it.

Casio Men’s G100-1BV G-Shock Classic Ana-Digi Watch review

The Casio Story

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market. In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week. It was the first watch in the world with a digital automatic calendar function that eliminated the need to reset the calendar due the variation in month length. Rather than using a conventional watch face and hands, a digital liquid crystal display was adopted to better show all the information. This culminated in the 1974 launch of the CASIOTRON, the world’s first digital watch with automatic calendar. The CASIOTRON won acclaim as a groundbreaking product that represented a complete departure from the conventional wristwatch.

Casio transformed the concept of the watch — from a mere timepiece to an information device for the wrist — and undertook product planning based on this innovative idea. We developed not only time functions such as global time zone watches, but also other radical new functions using Casio’s own digital technology, including calculator and dictionary functions, as well as a phonebook feature based on memory technology, and even a thermometer function using a built-in sensor. The memory-function watches became our DATA BANK product series, while the sensor watches developed into two unique Casio product lines of today: the Pathfinder series displaying altitude, atmospheric pressure, and compass readings.

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world’s toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio’s flagship timepiece product.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, and the radio-controlled function means users never have to reset the time. In particular, the radio-controlled function represents a revolution in time-keeping technology similar to the impact created when mechanical watches gave way to quartz technology. Through the further development of high radio-wave sensitivity, miniaturization, and improved energy efficiency, Casio continues to produce a whole range of radio-controlled models.
